Culmen Failover Engine
Automatic multi-carrier failover for MikroTik routers. Keeps subscribers online when an upstream provider fails.
What it does
- Independent health monitoring per uplink, with hysteresis — no flapping on a single dropped packet
- Sub-4-second failover between transit providers, invisible to most subscribers
- Scoped routing changes with correct connection tracking, so established sessions actually move rather than sticking to a dead path
- Scheduled bandwidth windows — apply different rate profiles by time of day
- Alarm logging for events that need a human rather than an automatic action
Why this is hard to get right
Naive failover scripts fail in ways that look fine on the router and terrible to the customer: probes that never traverse the path they claim to test, routing changes that leave old connections on the dead link, watchdogs that fire heavyweight scripts on a single missed ping. This engine was built by working through those failures on a production network.
